The MacBook Air, Apple's Latest Ultraportable Notebook Reviewed

Currently, several websites indicated their willingness to examine the MacBook Air, Apple's latest ultraportable notebook, which attracted overall attention.

Labeled as "the world's thinnest notebook", the laptop comes with the Intel GMA X3100 integrated graphics, a 13.3-inch LED backlight display, only one USB port, an 80GB 1.8-inch hard drive or an optional 64GB solid state drive, 2GB of memory, Intel Core 2 Duo processor, Ethernet LAN port and modem are provided via external USB adapters, a extensive trackpad with multi-touch gesture support, a micro-DVI port, a modified 802.11n wireless connection, the MacBook Air has no built-in optical drive, Bluetooth 2.1 technology. Concerning its weight, it was measured at three pounds and is already available at $1,799.

The MacBook Air determined the following advantages:

- a reasonably good battery life,

- pleasing look,

- strenuous case,

- comfortable-to-type-on full-size keyboard with a built-in ambient light sensor,

- an fabulously thin design (0.16-inches at its thinnest point),

- extensive track-pad with support for multi-touch gestures,

- endearing wide LED backlit screen.

The examined MacBook Air has also disadvantages:

- only one USB port, USB 3G modems won't fit in the MacBook Air,

- no Expansion slot (ExpressCard or PC Card), no media card reader, no firewire,

- price may be an issue with students and other consumers,

- a weak performance,

- no user-replaceable battery,claimed to be "the slowest Apple machine" ,

- limited hard drive storage space,

- expensive solid state drive option, no performance boost with the SSD,

- "belches out heat like nobody's business",

- no built-in Etnernet LAN port.
